About Piteå Archipelago Nature Reserve

Located in the northern part of the Gulf of Bothnia, the Piteå Archipelago Nature Reserve encompasses around 550 islands, islets, and skerries along the coast of Piteå Municipality in Norrbotten County, Sweden. The archipelago is characterized by a mixture of rocky outcrops, sandy beaches, shallow bays, and sheltered coves, shaped by post-glacial land uplift that continues to change the landscape. The reserve is notable for its diverse habitats that support rich flora and fauna, including large breeding colonies of sea birds such as terns, gulls, and cormorants. Vegetation varies from boreal forests with pine and spruce to coastal meadows and reed beds, creating important breeding and nesting grounds. Historically, the islands were used seasonally by fishing communities and sometimes for small-scale agriculture. Today, the area serves as a protected haven for wildlife as well as a destination for outdoor enthusiasts, particularly boaters, kayakers, anglers, and birdwatchers. Visitors can explore the tranquil island environment by small boat or kayak, enjoying opportunities for camping on designated sites as well as hiking on limited trails. The reserve’s remote setting and calm waters offer peaceful conditions for wildlife photography and nature observation. Its natural beauty and ecological importance have led to protection measures to preserve its unique coastal ecosystems while allowing low-impact recreational use. Seasonal restrictions may apply during bird breeding seasons to minimize disturbance.
